Morreion 4

  1. MORREION 4 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Morreion," by Jack Vance, published by Underwood-Miller, 1979.

When publisher Tim Underwood received all my drawings for this book he phoned to tell me that this particular drawing had an odd problem; the girl looked as though she had three breasts! So he returned it to me for a fixup. When I got the drawing back I looked at it and could not see what Tim was talking about, the girl had two breasts!!!

So I put the drawing aside and went back to work on a drawing I had been working on for another assignment. About ten minutes later, I glanced over at that picture and I couldn't believe my eyes, the girl looked as though she had three breasts! It was some kind of optical illusion! I was able to fix it, but I'm still amazed that I did not see the optical illusion when I first finished the drawing.

But that's OK, Norman Rockwell once painted a cover for, "The Saturday Evening Post" and unknowingly painted three legs on a man.
